By Dr. Howard Gauthier
I just love March Madness. From the major powers to the Cinderella’s, this is a great time year. One of the better games so far this year was when Michigan hit a shot with no time left to beat Houston in a second round game. While the shot was extremely dramatic and difficult, it wasn’t so surprising that he made it, especially to the Michigan players and coaches. You see, this is a play or scenario that they have practiced hundreds, if not thousands, of times. They were prepared for this situation and they executed it to near perfection.
This type of practice and preparation is what you need to do with your job search. You need to be prepared for the fundamentals of getting a job. More specifically, you need to understand each aspect of the job search process, practice each aspect, and be prepared for when the time comes for you to take that big shot; that shot at the job you’ve always wanted. In other words, you need to be able to create a great resume, write a cover letter that sells you, have a strong sales pitch, be smooth in your delivery of answers to interview questions, and know how to follow-up after the interview.
There are 10 areas of the job search process that you need to be prepared for. These include:
- Assessments – Know your strengths, skills and abilities
- Career Planning – Know what type of job you’re seeking
- Target Market – Know which colleges you are targeting
- Promotional Materials – Write a great resume and cover letter
- Sales Pitch – Create and deliver an outstanding sales pitch
- Interview Preparation – Become extremely organized for your interview
- Interview Questions – Understand the questions you’ll be asked and be prepared to answer them
- Promotional Campaign – Use various techniques to make effective contact with the hiring managers within your target organizations.
- Interviewing Basics – Know the basics of interviewing
- Strategic Follow-up – Use the proper strategies to effectively follow-up after an interview
March Madness is a great time of year. The teams that win and move on are a little lucky but extremely prepared. Make sure you’re prepared for that big shot at the job of your dreams when the time comes. For help with being prepared, you should read the book “Getting Hired in College Sports.” It has help quite a few people with getting a job within the sports industry. Best of luck on your job search.
